“Wild Life,” from “Free Solo”‘s Jimmy Chin is a rickety helicopter tour of a fascinating marriage

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 17:29:40 GMT

“Wild Life,” the latest eco-conscious documentary from filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (“Free Solo,” “Meru”) is a rickety helicopter tour of a fascinating marriage; nearly every scene makes you want to stop and explore in more detail.Things move fast with barely a beat of introduction. Those unfamiliar with American philanthropists Kristine McDivitt Tompkins and her husband, Douglas Tompkins, may feel in the film’s opening minutes as disoriented as if they’ve been dropped in the wilderness. One catches on that the Tompkinses purchased a lot of it: more than 1 million acres in Argentina and Chile, with the goal of gifting the land back as recognized national parks. The scale of the couple’s ambition teeters on the surreal. Asked in archival footage about a massive snow-flocked volcano on the horizon, Doug casually replies, “Yeah, that came with it.”The film doesn’t do much besides pair snippets of the Tompkins’ biographies with staggeringly beautiful shots of Pata...

Neon Nash Breaks Down Walls With New Single “Attack On B!tch”

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 17:29:40 GMT

From Los Angeles, breakout artist and anime fan Neon Nash is sure to start a rumble with her latest track “Attack On B!tch”. Inspired by the 2009 manga and 2013 anime Attack On Titan by Hajime Isayama, Neon creates a battlefield of sound worthy of a titan with a skilled blend of fast paced rap and smooth R&B vocals. What inspired your latest release “Attack On B!tch”?Fans of anime are probably quick to realize that my song “Attack On B!tch” now available on Spotify is inspired by the anime Attack On Titan. And I wanted this song to pay the anime justice in every way and I’m so happy with how it turned out, I feel like it definitely did. From the lyrics and references to the specific effects KJ Strock (who also produced for Machine Gun Kelly, Ice Nine Kills and Pop Evil) put in the mix, it turned out exactly how I envisioned it. There are so many references to the anime that I lost count and the extra added effects like the sword fighting sounds and stomps in the bassline just rea...

Peak snowpack: PG&E measures 211 inches of snow in final Lassen Peak survey

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 17:29:40 GMT

CHESTER — The final snowpack survey of the year took a bit more effort for the PG&E team at Lassen Volcanic National Park.In the dense, late April snow, PG&E hydrographers drilled through 211 inches of snowpack Tuesday to reach the gravel parking lot of the Lassen Peak trailhead — by jumping on their equipment like a pogo stick.“At many other sites we can core many samples by hand. At this site, we have to jump on the sampler to use our full body weight to get it down,” said PG&E Hydrographer Dan Stephens. “We’ve already broken gear this morning.”Stephens said Lassen Peak represents 3% of the Feather River watershed, and one of the stations measured 211 inches of snow, equivalent to 118 inches of water.Snowpack sample pieces are scattered away from the hole of which it was taken Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at the trailhead of Lassen Volcanic National Park in California. California bill to make internet platforms pay for news advances — with questions

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 17:29:40 GMT

A California bill that aims to ease newspapers’ internet-age woes by making Big Tech companies like Google and Facebook pay for the online articles their users access through their platforms advanced out of its first committee hearing Tuesday night, but not without lots of questions from lawmakers.“A free and diverse press is the backbone of a healthy and vibrant democracy,” Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks, an Oakland Democrat, told the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee, which passed her bill on a 9-0 vote with two members abstaining. “These dominant companies are padding their profit margins with locally produced news without adequately compensating the originators of that content.”But while her colleagues on the committee supported the idea, they said it’s going to need some work.“I appreciate that a problem-solver legislator has agreed to tackle this,” said Assemblyman Steve Bennett, a Democrat representing Oxnard. “...

Santa Clara County air quality earns failing grade

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 17:29:40 GMT

(BCN) -- Santa Clara County is still struggling to clean up its poor air quality, with communities of color among the most affected. The American Lung Association's newly released 2023 State of the Air report shows Santa Clara County scored an "F" on the report in high ozone days and particle pollution levels -- factors that contribute to an array of health concerns including asthma and respiratory infections. Experts said bad air quality and pollution disproportionately affects low-income residents and communities of color, and requires immediate attention. Gabriela Chavez-Lopez, executive director of the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley, said low-income communities, especially those in East San Jose, have long been disproportionately impacted by pollution. She said low-income residents live in areas where commerce and transportation are prioritized, meaning air quality is often deprioritized. She said an example is the Reid-Hillview Airport in East San Jose. A 2021 county ...

Stock market today: Big Tech rally props up Wall Street

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 17:29:40 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — A big rally for Microsoft and other Big Tech stocks is helping to prop up Wall Street Wednesday, a day after stocks tumbled to their worst drop in a month. The S&P 500 was 0.2% higher in early trading, though the worries about U.S. banks that hit the market a day before remain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 58 points, or 0.2%, at 33,589, as of 9:45 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was leading the market with a 0.9% gain.Tech stocks pushed upward on indexes after Microsoft reported stronger profit for the first three months of the year than analysts expected. It jumped 7%, and it carries a huge weight on the S&P 500 because it’s the second-largest stock in the index. Tech stocks have been some of the year’s best performers so far as they’ve laid off workers and made other cost cuts to improve their profitability. Hopes for a coming pause from the Federal Reserve on its barrage of hikes to interest rates have also helped them in particula...
